LGBTQ+ Language Trips — Learn Openly. Travel Safely. PEP Rates for Everyone.
A language trip should not be a compromise. And safety should not be a luxury.
That is why LanguagePeps puts a clear focus on destinations that are welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community — in law, in everyday life and in the spirit of the schools we recommend. For industry professionals who already live a cosmopolitan life, a language stay should be a place to be yourself — at any destination. With PEP conditions for every eligible booker, regardless of who they love or travel with.
Our selection is based on the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2025, the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map 2025 – and on the personal travel experiences of our LGBTQ+ team members. Where the reality is more nuanced, we say so directly.
All partner schools listed on this page have made a binding commitment in their Code of Conduct: no discrimination on the basis of age, gender, religion, nationality or sexual identity – towards course participants and staff alike. Some of our partner schools are owned and managed by queer individuals and are actively rooted in their local LGBTQ+ communities.
Europe – Our most LGBTQ+-friendly language travel destinations
Ranked number one on the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map for ten consecutive years — no other country in Europe has enshrined LGBTQ+ rights as consistently. Same-sex marriage since 2017, conversion therapy banned since 2016, explicit constitutional protection. English intensive courses in sunshine, relaxed café culture and an active queer scene. Educational leave recognised.
Ranked number one in the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2025. Same-sex marriage since 2010, strong queer cultural scene in Lisbon. The Arraial Lisboa Pride draws over 60,000 visitors each year. Portuguese courses available.
One of the most open countries in the world with one of Europe’s richest Pride calendars. Madrid (Chueca), Barcelona and Sitges are known throughout Europe — and Valencia hosts EuroPride 2026. Spanish intensive courses, educational leave recognised.
Same-sex marriage since 2013, anti-discrimination protection enshrined in law. The Marais district in Paris is one of Europe’s best-known queer neighbourhoods. Nice is open and relaxed. Montpellier is a pleasant surprise: the city has one of the most vibrant LGBTQ+ scenes in France — young, university-driven and active all year round, not just during Pride. France sits in a solid mid-field in international legal comparisons — those looking for an open atmosphere with a genuine cultural scene will find it in all three cities. French courses in Paris, Nice and Montpellier, educational leave recognised.
London, Brighton and Manchester represent three distinct flavours of queer city culture — and all three are outstanding language travel destinations. London’s Soho neighbourhood around Old Compton Street is one of the world’s most recognised LGBTQ+ hubs, and London Pride is among the largest in Europe. Brighton is widely regarded as Britain’s most LGBTQ+-friendly city — colourful, relaxed and right by the sea. Manchester’s Gay Village around Canal Street is established, open and alive all year round. Same-sex marriage in England since 2014. English courses at hand-picked schools, educational leave recognised.
Since the historic marriage equality referendum in 2015, Dublin has earned a reputation as a warm and open city for queer travellers. Learn English in an atmosphere where you feel welcome from the moment you arrive.
In 2024, Greece became the first Orthodox-Christian nation in Europe to legalise same-sex marriage. Mykonos is globally renowned as an LGBTQ+ destination, and Athens has a well-established queer cultural scene. The XLSIOR Festival takes place every August.
Honestly not a frontrunner: no same-sex marriage, only registered civil partnerships, and the current government has taken a conservative stance on LGBTQ+ policy. That said, Rome and Florence remain open and uncomplicated as travel destinations — discrimination in everyday life is rare in both cities. Those who prioritise legal protection as a travel criterion should know this. Those who choose Italy for the language, culture and way of life will feel comfortable. Italian courses available, educational leave recognised.
Beyond Europe – Open and safe worldwide
Jointly ranked number one in the Spartacus GTI 2025 alongside Portugal. Legally one of the most progressive countries in the world — same-sex marriage since 2005, social acceptance above 90%. Toronto (Church & Wellesley), Montréal and Vancouver have exceptionally vibrant LGBTQ+ scenes. English and French courses available.
Since January 2025 the first country in Southeast Asia to legalise same-sex marriage — a genuine milestone. Bangkok (Silom Soi 4) is the gay hub of Asia. Open in everyday life and uncomplicated for travellers. English and Thai language courses available.
No national same-sex marriage law — individual cities recognise partnerships, but a nationwide framework is still missing. In Tokyo and Osaka, social acceptance is high in practice and everyday discrimination is rare. Those who set legal equality as a benchmark should be aware of this. Those who choose Japan for the language, culture and urban openness will feel comfortable in both cities. Japanese courses available.
The first country in Latin America to legalise same-sex marriage (2010). Buenos Aires is considered the gay capital of South America — with an active cultural scene, a strong community and an openness that you feel in everyday life. Spanish courses available.
Same-sex marriage since 2013, strong legal protections. São Paulo hosts the world’s largest Pride parade. Socially open in the major cities — the political climate is polarised, but the urban reality in Rio and São Paulo is uncomplicated. Portuguese courses available.
Same-sex marriage nationwide since 2022. Mexico City is one of the most open metropolises in Latin America, and Puerto Vallarta is one of the best-known LGBTQ+ travel destinations in the world. Spanish courses available.
Same-sex marriage since 2020 — the first country in Central America. Socially evolving, open and uncomplicated in tourist areas. Spanish courses available.
Same-sex marriage since 2019. Quito is relaxed and open to travellers. Spanish courses available.
The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras in March is one of the world’s most celebrated queer events. Auckland Pride takes place in February. Learn English in a relaxed and open society downunder.
Why LanguagePeps stands for openness
Carefully vetted destinations
We only recommend countries where the legal and social situation is genuinely open. Where there are limitations, we say so directly — no window dressing.
Partner schools with a clear stance
All partner schools explicitly welcome LGBTQ+ participants and guarantee a respectful classroom environment. This is contractually binding, not just a promise.
PEP rates for everyone
Travel partners and companions receive the same conditions — regardless of the type of relationship or legal status.
Educational leave included
Many intensive courses at these destinations are recognised as educational leave in Germany. We provide all the necessary documentation.
Frequently asked questions about LGBTQ+ language trips
Are the recommended destinations really safe for LGBTQ+ travellers?
All listed destinations have been selected based on the Spartacus Gay Travel Index 2025, the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map 2025 and the personal experiences of our LGBTQ+ team members. Where we see limitations, they are noted directly alongside the destination. We also recommend checking the current travel advisories from your national foreign office before every trip.
Can I apply for educational leave as an LGBTQ+ person for these destinations?
Yes. Educational leave recognition depends on the language school and the German federal state — not the destination. All our partner schools at the listed destinations are recognised in at least one federal state. We provide all required documentation.
How do you ensure that partner schools genuinely operate without discrimination?
All partner schools have made a binding commitment in their Code of Conduct to a discrimination-free environment — for participants and staff alike. This is a requirement for joining the LanguagePeps network, not a voluntary self-declaration.
How does the booking process work?
After clicking the booking button, a short information notice will appear. Once confirmed, you will be redirected directly to the booking platform of our partner Linguista — a language travel operator with over 40 years of experience.
Do you offer destinations that are not listed on this page?
Yes. Not every destination in the LanguagePeps programme is suitable for this page. We do not place bookings for countries where homosexuality is criminalised. For all other destinations: we encourage you to consult local LGBTQ+ organisations about the current situation before travelling.
